The Strength in One
Materials: Pen on paper
Neoclassicism was a time of the revival of a classical style in art, literature, architecture and music. The art throughout this period was simple and focused on the classical world, including political themes and themes of bravery and war. The art consisted of paintings, sculpture, and architecture and was a large inspiration for Greek and Roman art.
As an art piece that relates to this time period, I decided to sketch an image of the back of a sculpture. To sketch this image, I used pencil to draw the outline of the image first, and then used a fine-liner marker. Using the fine liner, I added tonal value to the sketch to create shadow and depth in the back.
I decided to sketch a sculpture since sculptures had a large influence on the art during this period. The sculptures would be simple and would be created to show the human figure, and the emotions of the people during this period, as the war was taking place.
This sketch was inspired from a sculpture, created by Antonio Canova. Using this image of the sculpture, I cropped the image to only focus on the back of the man. Showing the back and all of the shadows contained in the image of the back, there is the quality of strength being portrayed. It appears as if there are muscles in the back, which shows strength, and I believe that Canova was trying to show the strength of the men during this time.
"You never know how strong you are until neing strong is the only choice you have."
