Minimalism - Connections

Connections

Materials:  Black marker on cartridge paper

Minimalists did not include the suggestion of metaphors in their art.  They wanted to focus on the placement of objects and on the physical space being occupied.  Viewers of the art were to experience qualities of weight, height, gravity and even the appearance of light.

In this art piece, I drew a telephone pole connecting telephone wires together.  Since minimalism does not use a lot of space when placing objects in an art piece, I wanted to place emphasis on the telephone pole on the left side of the paper.  By adding the telephone wires, viewers can follow the wires as they branch off into the unknown space.

Today, many people are connected throughout the world with the use of advanced technology. Cell phones as well as social media make it easier for people to stay connected as they have easy access when communicating with others.  I wanted people to realize that even though we may be across the world, distant from seeing another person, there will always be a way to communicate with that person.

I was inspired to create this drawing as I came across this image of two birds sitting upon a telephone wire.  The birds appear to be communicating with each other, and that is how I got the idea of a telephone pole, to show the connection between people.
